The “Waltz from Faust” falls into a different category altogether, that of the operatic paraphrase, a free adaptation of music from another work. Charles Gounod’s opera, based on Goethe’s retelling of the Faust legend, had its premiere in Paris on March 19, 1859. By this point in Liszt’s career, he no longer felt the proselytizing zeal to promote other composers’ compositions, nor did he require virtuoso showpieces for himself, having been long retired from the concert stage. If he prepared a transcription or a paraphrase, it was because he had a high regard for the music, and his attraction to Gounod’s Faust must have been immediate, for he purchased the vocal score later that year. Shortly thereafter Liszt was in Paris, and in a letter of May 1861 he speaks of a dinner with the composer: “Gounod had brought the score of his Faust, and I presented him with his Waltz for dessert . . .” In the well-known story, Faust desires to regain his lost youth, especially his missed opportunity for love, and he makes a deal with the devil (Méphistophélès) in exchange for his soul. Liszt focused on Faust’s relationship with Marguerite, beginning with the scene at the “Kermesse” (“Village Fair”) in Act 2 and the lively waltz that accompanies it. Although freely adapted, Liszt follows the basic outlines of the scene, which leads to their first meeting. The waltz fades away, and their conversation (which Liszt prints in the score) is not promising: Faust “Will you not allow me, my beautiful young lady, to offer you my arm and walk with you?” Marguerite “No, monsieur! I am neither a young lady, nor beautiful, and I have no need of your arm!” Liszt extends this section with a theme from their love duet in Act 3. The added music enables the focus to remain on the two lovers and also provides the central section with added weight to contrast effectively with the return of the waltz. As the waltz is repeated, Liszt enhances the conclusion with all manner of virtuoso fireworks, including brilliant use of the glissando.
